Quick answer

There is no single best tool. Use a general AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude for ideas and captions, Canva or Adobe Express for design, Descript or Instagram's Edits app for video, and Buffer, Hootsuite or Meta Business Suite for scheduling. Most have a free way to start.

Choose by job, not by hype

Social media work splits into four jobs: deciding what to say, making it look good, editing video and getting it published on time. Each tool below is strong at one or two of those. A small business usually needs one tool per job, not ten.

Writing and ideas

General assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are good at brainstorming post ideas, drafting captions in several tones and turning a long blog post into short posts. Give them your facts and your audience, and edit the result. ChatGPT and Gemini can also create and edit images inside the chat.

Design

Canva's AI features include Magic Write for copy, Magic Media for turning text into images and video, Magic Switch for reformatting and translating designs, and a one-click background remover. Adobe Express has an AI caption writer that can draft captions from your image, and Adobe Firefly generates images, video and audio from prompts.

Video

Descript lets you edit a video by editing its transcript, remove filler words, add captions and cut social clips from a longer recording. Edits, Instagram's video app, includes captions, a teleprompter, green screen, templates and AI photo animation, and exports without a watermark.

Scheduling with AI built in

Buffer's AI Assistant brainstorms, rewrites and tailors posts per platform, and Buffer says it can be used on a free account. Hootsuite's AI assistant drafts on-brand posts and campaign ideas, and its scheduler recommends times to publish. Meta Business Suite schedules to Facebook and Instagram from one calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Are there free AI tools for social media?

Yes. Most of these have a free plan or free tier with limits. Check each vendor's pricing page for what is included today.

Do I need a separate tool for each platform?

No. One scheduler can post to several platforms, and one design tool can resize for each.

Will AI content hurt my reach?

Platforms reward content people watch and share. Original, useful posts do well whether AI helped draft them or not. Reposted or low-quality content does not.
