What is AI coding?

AI coding means using an AI model to write, explain, change or review software code from plain-language instructions. It ranges from suggesting the next line as a developer types, to agents that change a whole project, to tools that build a simple app from a description. A person still has to check that the result is correct and safe.

Code is just text written in a strict language. The AI models behind tools like ChatGPT and Claude learned from huge amounts of text, including public code, so they can produce code that follows the same patterns. You describe what you want, the model writes code that probably does it, and a person or a test checks whether it really does.
