How to create a business website
Quick answer

Buy a domain, choose a platform that hosts for you, write five pages in your own words (home, services, about, contact, and one page that answers your most common question), then publish. Most owners are live in a day.

Decide what the site is for

Nearly every small business website has one job: turn a person who searched for you into a message, a call or a booking. Everything on the page should make that easier. If a section does not help someone decide to contact you, cut it.

Choose a domain

Your business name, as short as you can get it. Pick the country ending your customers expect (.co.nz, .com.au, .in) and add the .com only if you can get both. Turn on auto-renew and skip the add-ons. Budget around $30 a year.

The five pages

  • Home: what you do, where, and one button to contact or book. Above the fold.
  • Services or menu: each thing you offer, with a price or a “from” price. Hidden prices lose more customers than they protect.
  • About: one honest paragraph and a real photo. This is the page people read before they trust you.
  • Contact: phone, WhatsApp, email, hours, a map and a short form. Every one clickable on a phone.
  • One answer page: the question you get asked most, answered properly. This is what Google and AI assistants will send people to.

Write it in your own words

Record yourself explaining what you do to a friend and start from that. Cut anything you would not say out loud. If you use AI to draft, feed it your reviews and your real messages to customers so it sounds like you and not like a brochure.

Photos

Your own phone photos of your actual work, team and place beat stock photography every time. Six good ones are enough to launch.

Before you publish

  • Open it on your phone. Most visitors will.
  • Tap every button and link.
  • Add your business to Google Business Profile and link to the site.
  • Set a reminder to update hours and prices whenever they change. A wrong price costs more than no price.

After launch

Add one answer page a month. Each one is another door from search. Within a year you have twelve pages that bring customers while you sleep.
