Quick answer

An AI model is the trained part of an AI system: the file of learned patterns that turns an input into an output, such as a question into an answer or a photo into a label. The app you use, like a chat assistant, is the wrapper around it. The same model can sit behind many different apps.

The model is the engine, the app is the car

When people say an AI tool runs on a certain model, they mean the engine underneath. The model is what was produced by training: a very large set of numbers that captures the patterns it learned. On its own it does nothing until software sends it an input and shows you the output. That software, with its screens, settings and saved history, is the app.

Why there are so many models

Models are built for different jobs and different budgets. Some are large and capable but slower and more expensive to run. Others are small and fast, good enough for simple tasks. Some handle only text, others also handle images or audio. Providers release new versions regularly, which is why model names change so often.

  • Language models write and understand text.
  • Image models create or recognise pictures.
  • Speech models turn voice into text and back.
  • Prediction models forecast numbers, such as demand or risk.

What to ask when choosing a tool

  1. 1Is it good at my task?Test it on your real work, such as your own customer questions, not on a demo.
  2. 2What happens to my data?Check whether your inputs are stored or used to train the model, and whether you can switch that off.
  3. 3Can it use my information?A model only knows what it was trained on. Useful business tools connect it to your own details.
  4. 4Who checks its work?Make sure the app lets a person review drafts before anything reaches a customer.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT a model?

ChatGPT is an app. It runs on language models made by OpenAI, and the specific models behind it change over time.

Does a newer model always mean better results?

Often, but not always for your task. Test with your own examples before switching.

Can I train my own AI model?

You can, but most small businesses do not need to. Giving an existing model your own information gets most of the benefit for far less effort.
