What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is software that does tasks we normally think need human judgement, such as understanding language, recognising images, spotting patterns or making predictions. Instead of following only rules a programmer wrote, most modern AI learns from examples. You already use it in spam filters, maps and phone keyboards.
AI in one paragraph
Ordinary software does exactly what it was told, step by step. AI is software built to handle situations nobody wrote a rule for. Show it enough examples of spam and it learns to recognise new spam. Show it enough text and it learns to write. It does not think like a person, but it can do some narrow tasks that used to need one.
You already use it every day
- Your email moving junk out of your inbox.
- A map app predicting traffic and suggesting a faster route.
- Your phone keyboard suggesting the next word.
- Your bank flagging a payment that does not look like you.
- Streaming and shopping sites recommending what to watch or buy.
The main kinds of AI
| Kind | What it does | Everyday example |
|---|---|---|
| Predictive AI | Estimates what is likely to happen | Delivery time estimates, demand forecasts |
| Classification | Sorts things into groups | Spam filters, fraud alerts |
| Recognition | Understands images or speech | Photo search, voice dictation |
| Generative AI | Creates new text, images or audio | Chat assistants drafting an email |
The terms nest inside each other. AI is the whole field. Machine learning is the main way AI is built today. Deep learning is a powerful kind of machine learning. Generative AI and large language models are recent uses of deep learning.
What AI can and cannot do for a business
AI is good at work that is frequent, pattern-based and forgiving of a first draft: replying to common questions, summarising messages, sorting enquiries, writing a post you then edit. It is weak at anything it has no information about, such as your prices, your stock or what you promised a customer last week, unless you give it that information.
It can also be confidently wrong. That is why the safest way to use it is as a fast assistant whose work you check, not as a decision-maker.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI the same as a robot?
No. A robot is a physical machine. AI is software. Some robots use AI, but most AI you meet runs on a phone or a website.
Does AI actually understand things?
Not the way people do. It finds and reproduces patterns very well, which can look like understanding, but it has no experience of the world.
Do I need to be technical to use AI in my business?
No. Most AI tools for small businesses work through plain-language requests, the same way you would brief a new staff member.
