What is generative AI?

Generative AI is software that creates new content, such as text, images, audio or video, from a written request. It learns patterns from huge amounts of existing material and uses them to produce something new. ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are generative AI tools.
The short version
Most software follows rules someone wrote. Generative AI is different: it was trained on enormous amounts of text, images or sound, learned the patterns in them, and now produces new material that follows those patterns. Ask it for a product description and it writes one that has never existed before, in the style you asked for.
How it creates something new
A text model writes by predicting the next word, again and again, based on your request and everything it learned in training. An image model starts from noise and refines it, step by step, towards a picture that matches your description. Neither looks anything up unless it is connected to search or to your own documents.
What it is good at
- First drafts of emails, posts, descriptions and replies.
- Rewording, shortening and changing tone.
- Summarising long documents and conversations.
- Brainstorming names, ideas and angles.
- Creating images for posts and mock-ups.
What it gets wrong
Generative AI can state things confidently that are not true. It does not know your prices, your hours or your customers unless you give it that information. Treat everything it writes as a draft: check facts, numbers and anything a customer will rely on.
Frequently asked questions
Is generative AI the same as AI?
It is one kind of AI. Other kinds sort, predict or recognise things rather than create new content.
Is content made with generative AI original?
It is newly generated, but it can resemble existing work. Check images and important text before you publish them.
Do I need technical skills to use it?
No. You describe what you want in plain language. Clear, specific requests get better results.
