What is ChatGPT?
Kahu team·Updated 2 Oct 2026·5 min read
ChatGPT is an AI assistant made by OpenAI. You type or speak a request in everyday language and it writes, explains, summarises, analyses files or creates images in reply. There is a free plan and several paid plans, and it works on the web and in the iOS and Android apps.
ChatGPT in one paragraph
ChatGPT is a chat window connected to a large language model, a type of AI trained on huge amounts of text. You ask it something the way you would ask a capable assistant, such as “write a friendly reply to this complaint” or “summarise this PDF in five points”, and it answers in seconds. You can then ask it to change the tone, shorten it or try again. That back-and-forth is what makes it useful.
How it works
The model writes by predicting what should come next, based on your request and the patterns it learned in training. For some questions it also uses tools: it can search the web, read a file you upload or run an analysis on a spreadsheet. Without those, it works from what it learned, which is why it can sound sure of something that is out of date or wrong.
What people use it for
- Drafting emails, replies, posts and product descriptions.
- Summarising long documents, contracts and meeting notes.
- Explaining something unfamiliar in plain language.
- Working through a spreadsheet or a set of numbers.
- Creating images for posts and mock-ups.
- Researching a topic, with deep research for longer reports.
The plans, briefly
OpenAI’s pricing page lists a free plan, paid personal plans called Go, Plus and Pro, and Business and Enterprise plans for organisations. The free plan includes unlimited text chats, with limited uploads, image creation, voice and deep research. Paid plans raise those limits and add features. Prices are shown in your local currency and change, so check the pricing page rather than any figure you read elsewhere.
What to watch out for
- It can be confidently wrong. Check facts, prices, dates and anything legal.
- It does not know your business unless you tell it: your services, prices and policies.
- On personal plans, your chats can be used to train OpenAI’s models unless you opt out in settings. Business and Enterprise plans are not used for training by default.
- Do not paste customer details, health information or passwords without a reason and a policy.
Frequently asked questions
Who makes ChatGPT?
OpenAI, an AI company based in the United States. It also builds the models that power ChatGPT.
Is ChatGPT the same as a search engine?
No. It writes answers rather than listing pages. It can search the web when needed, but you should still check important facts at the source.
Do I need technical skills to use it?
No. You write in plain language. Clear requests with the right details get better answers.
