What is deep learning?

Deep learning is a type of machine learning that uses neural networks: many layers of simple connected units that each learn a small part of a pattern. Stacking many layers lets it learn very complex things, such as recognising faces, understanding speech and writing text. It powers most of the AI tools people talk about today.
What a neural network is
A neural network is a mathematical structure loosely inspired by the brain. It is made of layers of small units, often called neurons, each connected to units in the next layer. Each connection has a strength, and training adjusts those strengths, millions or billions of them, until the network gives good answers. Deep simply means there are many layers.
What the layers do
Take a photo of a dog. The first layers pick out edges and colours. Later layers combine those into shapes like ears and eyes. The last layers recognise the whole dog. Nobody programmed what an ear looks like: the network worked it out from examples. Language works in a similar way, building from words to phrases to meaning.
Deep learning versus other machine learning
| Classic machine learning | Deep learning | |
|---|---|---|
| Best with | Tables of numbers, like sales records | Images, sound and language |
| Data needed | Moderate | Usually very large |
| Computing power | Runs on ordinary computers | Often needs specialised chips to train |
| Explaining its answers | Often possible | Hard, the reasoning is spread across the network |
Why it matters to you
Deep learning is the reason AI suddenly became useful for everyday work. Voice dictation, photo search on your phone, automatic captions, translation, and chat assistants that draft emails and summarise documents all depend on it. You do not need to understand the maths, just its strengths and its limits.
- Strong at: recognising images and speech, understanding and writing language, finding patterns in messy data.
- Weak at: explaining why it gave an answer, knowing facts it was never given, and admitting when it is unsure.
Frequently asked questions
Is deep learning the same as a neural network?
Deep learning is the practice of training neural networks with many layers. The network is the structure, deep learning is the method.
Does deep learning work like a human brain?
Only loosely. The idea of connected units came from the brain, but the way these networks learn and work is very different.
Are large language models deep learning?
Yes. A large language model is a very large neural network trained with deep learning on huge amounts of text.
