What can AI agents automate?

AI agents can automate most of the written, repetitive work in a small business: answering enquiries, following up quotes, filling cancelled bookings, drafting and scheduling social posts, updating your website, chasing reviews and summarizing your week. They cannot yet do the physical work, and they should not make money or legal decisions without you.
The rule of thumb
If a task involves reading something, deciding something reasonable, and writing or clicking something, an agent can probably do it. If it involves a ladder, a scalpel or a signature on a contract, it cannot. Most owners find that about half their week falls into the first bucket.
Customer enquiries
Website forms, WhatsApp messages, Instagram DMs, email. An agent reads each one, answers from your real prices and hours, and either books the next step or flags the ones that need you. This is usually the first thing owners hand over, because response time is the single biggest factor in whether an enquiry becomes a customer.
Follow-ups
Quotes that went quiet. Customers who have not rebooked in three months. Reviews you meant to ask for. Agents are good at follow-ups because each one needs a slightly personal message that references the original conversation, and that is exactly what a language model does well.
Bookings and scheduling
- Filling a cancelled slot from the waitlist.
- Moving appointments when a customer asks, with the confirmation sent.
- Sending reminders in the customer's tone, not a robotic one.
- Blocking time when you say "I am off Friday."
Marketing and content
Turning one photo into a week of posts. Drafting the monthly email from what actually happened this month. Writing the ad copy for the promotion you mentioned in passing. The agent drafts; you approve; it schedules. The hours saved here are often the biggest.
Website upkeep
New hours, a price change, a new service, a seasonal banner. Tell the agent in a sentence and the page is updated. This is the kind of task that otherwise waits weeks because it never feels urgent.
Back office
- Summarizing the week: enquiries, bookings, no-shows, what people asked most.
- Drafting replies to supplier emails.
